The Goal: To inspire important conversation and action on addressing global warming and help students meet science and social studies standards with curriculum focused on global warming.
The Course: This one credit course will develop skills and tools for teaching about global warming in classrooms and other educational venues. Course attendees will have the chance to:
Gain a deeper understanding of the science and social impacts of global warming through online and in-person experiences;
Interact with prominent Twin Cities leaders who address global warming as part of their professional lives;
Experience interactive and hands-on ways of teaching about global warming as a scientific, social and cultural issue;
Create plans to integrate global warming content and activities into classroom and other learning contexts.
The online portion of the course runs from June 12 – July 14, and there are two on-campus sessions, June 21 and 28. The first on-campus session is a colloquium with a panel of Twin Cities leaders (described below). The second session will offer participants the chance to reflect on the colloquium with each other and try out some activities and teaching techniques.
The Colloquium: “Looking for Leadership,” a Global Warming Colloquium will bring together classroom teachers registered for graduate credit with Twin Cities leaders and interested members of the public in order to move beyond social, professional, and intellectual boundaries to create networks of people and ideas to tackle this pressing issue. The evening will begin with a networking reception followed by panel presentations, discussion, and Q & A. The panel includes prominent Twin Cities leaders involved in how the Twin Cities (and beyond) will address global warming. Panel members include:
Will Steger, Polar Explorer and educator, discussing his firsthand experience with the impacts of global warming and the importance of education in addressing the problem.
Chris Coleman, St. Paul Mayor, discussing how the Capitol city is taking on the problem of global warming.
Cynthia Lesher, President and CEO of Northern States Power for MN, ND, and SD Xcel Energy, discussing how business can be part of the solutions to global warming.
