Pioneering New Frontiers in Environmental Learning

CGEE has been an internationally recognized pioneer in creating thematic learning programs for K-12 students around the globe. These programs include Will Steger's 1990 Trans-Antarctic Expedition, the Africa Trek and Maya Quest programs, and Journey North. Our current programs are the Rivers of Life, 1000 Friends of Frogs, and Self Expressing Earth. These award-winning, multidisciplinary programs have evolved over the last decade to make the best use of today's telecommunications technologies as tools to support hands-on learning and stewardship of local environments. Classroom learning is enriched through dialogues with renowned content experts, school-to-school networking, and online publication of creative work by students. These programs model inquiry-based, constructivist approaches to teaching and learning.

Rivers of Life uses traditional and Internet communication technologies to bring a vibrant exploration of the world's greatest rivers-and discovery of local waterways-into classrooms for grades 3-12. This award-winning program is built on student-centered inquiries, interactions with online guests, hands-on classroom activities, local field experiences, research, and creative writing and artistic work to connect global river issues to local waterways. A Thousand Friends of Frogs engages students as citizen scientists who collect important data while learning about frogs, their role as bio-indicators, and the environments upon which we all depend. This program has been featured in the national media and praised for bringing attention to the issues of deformed frogs and amphibian decline. The project consists of a study guide, online access to experts, traveling education trunks, and a wealth of web-based resources. We have also commissioned an educational play for K-6 audiences. Self Expressing Earth (SEE) teaches ecological literacy through the expressive arts. Whether offered as a live training event or as an online program, SEE's process nurtures and celebrates people's positive connections to Earth through expressive art-making. In SEE, art is the path to the heart. SEE ONLINE, the Internet-based version of the program, delivers environmental education directly to classrooms worldwide. Click here for more information.
