This week's artifact is from one of the south's legendary plantations. The grand double row of oak trees between the mansion and the levee that runs beside the Mississippi River serves two purposes. First it creates an incredibly beautiful entrance to a magnificent old home. Second, and just as important, the shady tunnel formed by the arching branches draws cool air from the river into the house--an important function on sweltering delta summer days. |
