Watershed Atlas
Mystery #4

This isn't any ordinary rock. This is in an historic part of our town. The rock's name is Indian Oven Rock. The rock has an oven shaped hole that was used to bake and parch their corn.

Hornbine School was built in 1845-1846. It was one of 15 one room school houses in our town that went up to grade 9. In the 1920's an addition was added to the building. The town closed the school house in 1937. Soon after that, the land was auctioned off. It was vacant for many years. The Hornbine School Association bought it as part of the 325th anniversary of our town in 1968. They restored the school by putting in new student desks and a new teacher's desk. Today, children in grade 3 come to Hornbine School on their class trip.
