Mystery #4

Anawan's rock , named after Indian chief Anawan is located near the Squanakonk Swamp. It was the site of the surrender of Chief Anawan which ended the Wompanoag tribe's war with the British.

Anawan was brother to King Phillip and became chief sachem, or king of the Wompanoag tribe when King Philip was killed by the British a few weeks earlier. Captain Benjamin Church, a famous Indian fighter, received word that Anawan was hiding in the north end of the Squanakonk Swamp. Anawan and his remaining warriors fled to this location to hide from English troops.

After a difficult march to the site by Church and his troops, he surprised Anawan who surrendered without a fight. Church told Anawan he would be safe and took him to Plymouth, but authorities there beheaded him anyway.
