Mystery #4

Redway Plain is every important to our town's history. This historic place was where in the 1700's the minutemen would meet to prepare to go to battle with England. They were called minutemen because they had to be ready at a minute's notice. The picture shows a reenactment of the minutemen getting ready to go to battle with England. After the war was over, the field was used as a crop field and is still today. Ê Ê

The Perryville Dam was originally known as Butterworth Falls. This name was used in 1690. A family called Carpenter owned it and operated a sawmill here through the Revolutionary War. It was then purchased by the Perry family in the1850's. The Perry's operated a larger turning mill that produced tool handles as well as bobbins for the cotton manufacturing industry in Blackstone Valley. This business lasted until the 1890's. A sawmill and gristmill operated on the site until the mid 1930's. Perryville dam is now maintained by our town and is a beautiful place to see.
