Watershed Atlas
Mystery #4

The name "Bad Luck Pond" has been associated with this area since 1700's. The Beverly and Kelton families operated a water powered saw mill for many years on the north side of the pond for many years beginning in the 18th century. Bad Luck Pond as it exists today, was formed by the construction of a dam across Bad Luck Brook, on the far side of the pond in 1911, on the site of an earlier dam built in 1838. Through neglect the earlier dam had deteriorated and washed away with a roar on June 2, 1859. The rushing flood waters destroyed bridges and crushed part of the cotton mill. A man seeing the dam about to wash away, mounted his horse and rushed ahead of the flood, warning the residents of danger, so there were no injuries. Mapped as part of the Shad Factory Reservoir in the southern part of our town. Ê Ê ÊÊ

Our watershed spans two states. Plymouth Plantation was founded by the Pilgrims. Plymouth Plantation is the village where the Pilgrims used to live. The Pilgrims came over here to find freedom and a new life. They made friends with the local Indians. Plymouth rock is located there. Plymouth Rock is an historic landmark. When the Pilgrims landed in Plymouth, they first stepped on this rock which is now called Plymouth Rock. Over the years, sand has washed up on shore and now the rock is in a hole. Plymouth Rock is protected by a granite monument today.
