Today was the first day of the education program for local schools. We arrived in Red Wing at 8:00 and boarded motor boats that took us to the island where we had set up a very large tent the night before. Once we got to the island we awaited the arrival of the groups of students. As the students arrived we greeted them and instructed them where they were to go.
After a brief welcome the students were divided into groups and went off with the different specialists. Our group were also divided up and we assisted the Presenters at the varying stations. The stations were: Native American storytelling with Joe Cambell, a birding tour with Hawk and Dan, water quality testing with Joey and Bonnie, and habitat interpretation with Bruce.
The students had the chance to experience three of the stations, most of which included hands on activity. Our group assisted the specialists and the students as well as taking photos of the different activities.
After five busy hours we took a boat back to the dock and reflected upon the experience. Then we met up with Tracy, the leader who would be relieving John. We discussed activities for the rest of the day and week while seated on the Lillybelle which was docked. We then walked to the Red Wing public library where we could access our e-mail accounts.
After we had said goodbye to John we got into the van and Tracy drove us to Frontenac State Park and did a short hike. On this hike we saw many warblers and other beautiful birds. We travelled back to Red Wing to pick up Heather(from the Audobon Ark) before travelling back to camp where Maike, Laura and Dominik prepared us a delicious German meal, zwiebelkuchen which is an onion cake. Tracy settled in quite well with games of table tennis
