Battle of Memphis June, 1862 |

 The
city of Memphis, Tennessee was defended by General Pierre Beauregard of
the Confederacy (right). Had he been given time to prepare for the coming
of General Henry Halleck, the western regional commander for the Union,
Beauregaurd could have used the bluffs surrounding the city to his advantage.
However they were not given any time and as a result all they had was 200
local troops and what was left of the river boats from New Orleans to defend
the city.
The people of the city crowded around the battle field to watch the 90 minute taking af Memphis, which fell on June 6, 1862. |
