CGEE’s work with Minnesota PBS continues to amplify the impacts of our education and stewardship initiatives throughout our region. This month we honor that relationship by hosting a special screening of Medicine Ball, a new documentary by Leya Hale (Dakota/Diné), who is a CGEE advisor and acclaimed Minnesota PBS producer. The film follows Native college athletes Lexus Redthunder and Leroy Staples Fairbanks IV as they navigate college life and basketball at the University of Minnesota Morris, which is located on the site of a former Native boarding school. Their journey reveals how basketball became a powerful symbol of resilience, hope, and cultural pride in Native communities.
Ms. Hale, who has won multiple Emmy awards for her work, will introduce the film and answer audience questions. "As a Native woman filmmaker, I am committed to reclaiming stories that have too often been hidden or silenced. Medicine Ball is not just about basketball, but about legacy, survival, and the ways our people continue to adapt and thrive,” says Hale. "My hope is that audiences walk away with a deeper understanding of the boarding school era’s enduring impact, but also the hope, ceremony, and empowerment embodied in the game of basketball for Native communities today.”
